Friday afternoon crowd

I ‘ve been tearing apart my office looking for my tasting notes then I realized, Roger didn’t put any out and I took pix of all of the wines and took some notes on my phone. I wish I had that hour back. But I wish I could have the hour again at this tasting. I would sample them again. I really enjoyed this tasting.
The Smoking Loon Sauvignon Blanc was very nice. Why? Because I’m a bit tired of super grassy Sauv Blancs. This is not. I like the body and the ever slight sweet fruit on the start. And their Unoaked Chard was pretty nice as well. I have had Smoking Loon before but I don’t remember enjoying them this much. But then again I’ve tried their reds not their whites.
The other great part is the $7.99 price which is right where I want it.
The Unabashed Zin was very nice. And I would love to get one of the Hedges Red Mountain and cellar it for a few years. I’t nice now but it needs to open a bit. A few years might do it. They claim it can cellar for 25 years. Interesting. I think it shows it’s $29.99 roots so to speak.
And the food was pretty darn good especially the cheeses. The Aged Cheddar with Habenero and Chipotle was HOT. If you want to read about them go to

Smoking Loon Sauvingon Blanc 2014 | California
Our 2014 Smoking Loon Sauvignon Blanc is bright and delicate, with aromas of green apple, grapefruit and mint. Grassy notes throughout the wine meld seamlessly with the zesty flavors of citrus throughout. Palate cleansing and expressive, this Sauvignon Blanc presents delicious flavors of melon on the palate. We recommend pairing with seafood, try fresh white fish tacos with jalapeño and citrus salsa, pan-seared scallops atop jasmine rice or even slices of apple and jicama with honey.–From their Website Cost: $7.99
Smoking Loon Pinot Grigio 2014 | California
Our 2014 Smoking Loon Pinot Grigio opens with enticing tropical aromas of white guava along with g and a slight minerality. Refreshing and light, this wine has juicy melon and citrus avors with a hint of banana. Crisp acidity and a zesty nish make this wine a versatile food wine. Enjoy paired with spicy dishes, grilled poultry or seafood.–From their Website Cost: $7.99
Smoking Loon Unoaked Chardonnay 2014 | California
Our 2014 Smoking Loon “Steelbird” Chardonnay represents the true characteristics of Chardonnay, free from the inuence of oak aging. One hundred percent stainless steel aging allows vibrant aromas of tropical pineapple, honeydew melon and meyer lemon to shine through. Refreshing avors of citrus and apple are rounded out by a steely element. A lively palate and cleansing nish make this a versatile food-pairing wine. Enjoy a glass of Steelbird with shrimp scampi, chicken Caesar salad or pasta with grilled vegetables.–From their Website Cost: $7.99
Ryan Patrick Rock Island Red 2012 | Wahluke Slope, Washington
Aroma: Blueberry preserves, a touch of lavender, dried herb, hints of anise and cocoa powder. Flavor: A generous entry leads to a jammy mid palate and a pleasurable silky finish. Varietals: 58% Merlot, 36% Syrah, 5% Petite Sirah, 1% Primitivo. –From their Website Cost: $19.99
Hedges Red Mountain 2011 |
Deep purple color, yet not opaque. A sense of finesse in the color which suggests liveliness on the palate. The mouth feel is angular, with grace and precision. The 2011 vintage produced a savory character in the wines, like that of fennel, salt, tar and steel. Highly integrated tannins, dusty in a sense, alongside protective acidity guarding against premature oxidation. This wine, like other Red Mountain AVA wines before, will develop beautifully for up to 25+ years with proper cellar- ing. While a fine wine now with food, should develop well for drinking on its own as it slowly evolves. BLEND: 44% CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 33% MERLOT, 16% SYRAH, 3% CABERNET FRANC, 4% MALBEC /–From their Website Cost: $29.99
Motto Unabashed Zinfandel 2013 | California
Dark and complex, our Zinfandel starts off with soft, leathery aromas and finishes with flavors of chocolate-covered raspberries with a hint of spice.–From their Website Cost: $12.99
