The Friday afternoon crowd
I t was a busy weekend for the Vineyard having sponsored tasting The Mason Jars on Saturday night during the Thunder Over Evans. I stopped by Friday afternoon as things were starting up. I’m afraid I would have to miss the Saturday night tasting and the Mason Jars.
I was impressed by the two whites,Cannonball Chardonnay and The Whip White Blend , both I would enjoy during the summer. The Cannonball is got just the right hint of sweetness. The Whip has lots of body. The Chateau des Annibals Rosé was interesting in that when you looked at it in the glass it looked white. Someone happened to have a “Rosé “Barometer”wine color chart that describes the 7 shades of Rosé. This would was somewhere between light pink and rose petal. But Rosé it was. I enjoyed it because it had enough fruit to make it enjoyable without having to eat anything with it.
The Ayres Pinot Noir drank like a Pinot and the Motto Cabernet Sauvignon drank a bit like a Pinot. That’s an interesting twist. I liked them both. On second thought maybe the Motto was more of a cab because it did have a nice backbone with some very nice dark fruit. It did have a bit more acidity that I’m used to.
The >Shebang Cuvee 10 is one of the driest blends I’ve had in a while. Most blends I’ve tried lately seem to go for slightly jammy flavors. This one does not.

Cannonball Chardonnay 2012 | California
One is immediately struck with complex and racy notes: aromas of light pineapple, sweet spice, vanilla, honeysuckle and minerality.

The Whip White Blend 2012 | Livermore Valley, California
The Whip 2014 is an elegant and balanced wine, fruit driven with a hint of toasty oak. While this is a Chardonnay and Semillon led style, each grape varietal has a purpose in our blend that I hand select to add elements like structure, texture, floral notes, and acidity. This unique wine showcases juicy fruit flavors of white peach, pear and melon with bright acidity and a touch of sweetness that creates a smooth and creamy finish.–From their Website Cost: $21.99
Chateau des Annibals Rose 2014 | Provence, France
Grenache, Cinsaut, Syrah, Rolle, Ugni B grapes used. Clear, shiny, pale pink color. Dry and fruity wine. Aromas of peach accompanied by fresh notes of citrus and pineapple. Suggested dishes: summer cooking, seafood, white meat. –From their Website. Cost: $25.99
Ayres Pinot Noir 2014 | Ribbon Ridge, Oregon
Winemaker Brad McLeroy honed his winemaking skills at the famed Domaine Drouhin Oregon under the direction of Veronique Drouhin. His full-time position at Ayres completes his circle of wine experience from retailer to distributor to producer. According to McLeroy, “My wines will always have a soul.” Open a bottle and it shows… We believe our wine gives voice to the soil. We believe that our wine guides us as much as we guide our wine. It’s about reciprocity. It’s a relationship that begins in the vineyard, from the first sign of bud break to the last cluster harvested. We have the luxury of growing the grapes, making the wine on-site, and living in the company of the vines. We love what we do here at AYRES.–From their Website. Cost: $25.99
Motto Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 | California
Our Cabernet Sauvignon walks a fine line. it has both backbone and elegance, with a soft and delicate nose of ripe red fruit. Dark, concentrated flavors of red plum, caramel and bright raspberry explode out of the glass for a lasting finish.–From their Website. Cost: $11.99
Shebang Red Blend Cuvee 10 | Sonoma California
Mostly Zinfandel blended with Carignane, Petite Sirah, Mourvedre, Alicante Bouchet, Grenache, Syrah, Alicante Bouchet, Grenache, Syrah, Barbera and a touch of whites for aromatics. The informing impulse behind Shebang is to create a wine that is long on deliciousness and low on pretense. We do this by vinifying the wines with the same care and love as the higher end Bedrock wines- picking at respectable sugar levels (not too high!), using only native yeast fermentations, and a trace of good French oak to round things out.–From their Website. Cost: $12.99
