T he Vineyard will be presenting some great wines from Zac Brown (Z. Alexander Brown) and Dave Phinney at Orrin Swift. Phinney is famous for his “Locations” wine that are identified by a 1 or 2 letters. This weekend Roger will be featuring CA and P from Orin Swift’s Locations label. Can you guess where what locations they are from? The concept of ‘Locations’ is quite simple but ultimately made complex while retaining ‘fun’ at the core. Simple in that the ethos is to make the best possible wine from a given country or location. The complex is tracking down vineyards that contribute to the blend while keeping the soul of the wine in place. The fun is traveling around the world and meeting incredible people while tearing down the ‘rules wall’, making the wine his own way.

Here are the detailed wine notes:
Les Vigneirum de Flores Sac Piquepoul Blanc |
In Languedoc, Piquepoul blanc is used both for blending and for varietal wines. Red wines produced from Picpoul noir are high in alcohol, are richly scented, but have a very pale colour, which has made the variety more popular as a blending ingredient than as a producer of varietal wines.
Locations CA White | Napa, California
There’s not a thing about this wine online or at their website. Guess I’ll have to drop by and try.

August Briggs Old Vine Zinfandel | Calistoga-Napa Valley, California
Dark ruby in color with aromas of black raspberry, boysenberry, cedar, clove, sweet oak and black plums. This is what you can call an old style Zinfandel with a ripe core of fruit and a good backbone of tannin (a zinfandel that matches well with bolder food dishes). This is a Zin that will age nicely for another 6-8 years.

Z. Alexander Brown Uncaged Red Blend |
Our 2013 Proprietary Red Blend is dark garnet in the glass, with commanding aromas of blueberry, cassis and cedar that preview a bold, mouth-filling palate stacked with concentrated layers of ripe blueberry, black cherry and baking spice. Robust and full-bodied with excellent weight in the mid-palate, this complex wine leaves a lasting impression with a smooth, round and full finish.

Z. Alexander Brown Uncaged Cabernet Sauvignon |
Our Z. Alexander Brown 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon unfolds with rich aromas of black cherry, cola and mocha. Bold tannins frame a powerful mid-palate layered with mouth-filling flavors of ripe blackberry, black currant and chocolate covered cherry, as well as subtle hints of baking spice. Smooth and balanced, an elegant finesse defines the long and lingering finish.
Locations P | Portugal
P is for Portugal. The glass opens with a triple layered aroma of savory peppercorn and cocoa, jasmine flowers, and
black fruit. The immediate dark chocolate structure provides the canvas on which black cherries, ” roasted lamb, and exotic spices intermingle. It finishes with the tapering dark chocolate structure and culminates with hints of vanilla. This blend has Touriga Naçional, Trincadeira and Touriga Franca. Since this is a table wine Portugese wines are not allowed to have “vintages”.
