I stopped by Roger’s Friday afternoon. It was nasty outside. Much better inside. Some nice warm nibbles by John and some nice reds to warm me up.
I thought the Levendi Reserve Napa Chardonnay was the epitome of an oaked California chardonnay. Real nice. My favorites were the Ca’ Momi Rosso di Napa and the Uppercut Napa Meritage. But with the Ca’ Momi being only $10.99 I think it wins the day. I would try and describe them but I kept hitting the nibbles and that messed my palate up a bit.
If you like a French sparkler that doesn’t whack your nose with bubbles I thought the Prince De Richemont Brut was excellent. Maybe a hint of honeysuckle.
The Flora Springs Napa Red Blend was surprising dry for a red blend. This would go well with a nice juicy steak.
One wine that has been getting some attention lately is the Bodega Garzon Tannat. I got to sample at Wine World as well. Everyone seems to be touting this wine from Uruguay. I has a bit of burnt gunpower on the nose. Very interesting. It is one of the best Tannat’s I’ve had.
Not a bad tasting for $12. The average of the six wines presented is over $20 a bottle. A real bargain when you throw in the nibbles.

Bodega Garzon Tannat 2014 | Uruguay
A juicy, full-bodied wine. Rich purple in colour with very fresh aromas reminiscent of red and black fruits such as plums and raspberries along with a delicate spicy nose. In the mouth, it is presented with a strong personality. Its mature tannins and minerality transform it into a wine with great soil identity. Top 100 #41, 90Pts. Website
Cost: $17.99
Flora Springs Napa Red Blend 2013 |
From one of the best vintages in recent history, this dark red wine is a fascinating blend of classic Bordeaux varietals joined by a significant portion of Syrah. On the nose, the wine offers abundant aromas of ripe black cherries and raspberry along with whiffs of white pepper and dusty sage. Flavors of blackberries, boysenberries and plum follow, coating the palate with rich, red fruit. Deftly oaked in a combination of new and seasoned barrels, the wine displays toasted coconut with hints of vanilla and clove. The wine is fruit-driven, but derives complexity from the small percentage of Cabernet Franc which adds hints of tea, graphite and savory herb. Silky tannins bring the wine to a finish with bright fruit lingering on the lush palate. Website
Cost: $29.99
Uppercut Napa Meritage 2013 |
The Uppercut Meritage brims with black cherry, ripe raspberry and red currant character, accent by intriguing hints of mocha and bay leaf. This myriad of aromas and flavors reflect a core blend of Merlot, and smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The plush-texture flavors fan out across the palate in layers of juicy red and dark-fruit and then culminate in a long finish tinged with vanilla, nutmeg and hazelnut from barrel aging.
