Suzanne Beeland, of Southern Sophistication, presented quite the spread. Here she is sporting her New Year’s attire.

I t was ime to wrap up the holidays. Roger did it in style with some nice wines and great nibbles from Suzanne Beeland, of Southern Sophistication. All sorts of holiday favorites, some with a new twist. On Saturday, when I stopped by, Roger was trying out his new tasting hours which starting next week will be from 5-7 on Fridays and Saturdays.
Roger scored on a case of Luke Goldschmidt Cabernet Sauvignon. Normally it isn’t available outside the vineyard. It made for a really nice tasting. Here’s how Roger described it “Luke Goldschmidt Cabernet Sauvignon is a project between winemaker Nick Goldschmidt and his son to generate a wine that shows a balance of aspect, sunlight, water and microclimate. The Vineyard is proud to carry the Goldschmidt line! We carry the single vineyard higher end Goldschmidt, the Celsea Merlot, the Hilary Cab, the Katherine Cab. By a stroke of luck, The Vineyard was shipped a case of Luke Goldschmidt Cabernet Sauvignon!”
And the food was great. Suzanne had bacon wrapped crackers (to die for), incredible cocktail wienies, pastrami/tomato/mozzarella skewers… More than I can list.

Verum Sauvignon Blanc | Patigonia,Spain
This is a Sauvignon Blanc single varietal wine elaborated after careful selection of the best stocks planted by the López-Montero family 18 years ago. This single vineyard wine comes from Casa Ramiro estate, whose poor, shallow soil has a very high limestone content.
This wine ages in Roc Cuve® barriques for four months. The daily batonnage of its lees brings about intensified aromas and fullness in the mouth.

Rolf Binder Henrick Shiraz Mataro Grenache 2009 | Barossa Valley, Australia
The ‘Heinrich’ is a tribute wine to Rolf and Christa’s father, Rolf Heinrich Binder as he loved to work with these three great Barossa varietals – Shiraz, Mataro and Grenache. Rolf continues that legacy with this classic blend and rates it as one of his favourite wines to make. It’s more common to see a GSM blend in the Barossa, but Rolf believes that Shiraz is our best asset, so why not lead with your best? The blend ratio is typically in the range of 50/30/20.
This is an estate wine with the Shiraz and Mataro grapes grown in the Stephanie vineyard, adjacent to the winery. The Grenache is sourced from the estate vineyard on the Western Ridge at Gomersal, planted in the early 1950s as well as some Grenache from the Binder Deans Light Pass vineyard.
Each variety adds its individual talents with nuances of chocolate, raspberry, beef stockpot and a berry fruit sweetness. The finish is dry and the flavours linger on the palate with subtle oak and tannin adding to the fruit characters creating a full and comprehensive wine that will drink well now, but also benefit from 5-10 years cellaring.

Peter Lehman Clancy’s Cabernet, Shiraz & Merlot 2011 | Australia
Top 100 wine. Clancy’s Red is a pure Barossa wine: a collaboration of winemakers and growers who believe in making honest wines that punch above their weight. A blend of Cabernet, Merlot and Shiraz, this wine is soft and supple and full of juicy flavour. A deep cherry red colour leads to a bouquet showing blackcurrant from the Cabernet, vibrant red fruits from Shiraz and Merlot and charry oak in the background. The palate shows rich plummy bright red fruits, and long, savoury tannins adding complexity.
