Some Friday afternoon tasters

T he Vineyard is showcasing wines from Joseph Wagner’s Copper Cane Wines & Provisions group that features some of California’s finest winemakers. Wagner is a fifth generation Napa Valley winemaker whose family founded Caymus. The average price is close to $23 so worth checking out. There will be great nibbles as usual.
I stopped by Friday afternoon. I liked everyone of the wines today and might find an excuse to sneak out of the house on Saturday and come back. They had planned to taste the Carne Humana Red Blend but unfortunately they couldn’t get it in in time so they substituted a different Wagner wine, Conundrum Red Blend.
I’m tempted to jump to some of my favorites but I should start at the beginning. The Carne Humana White Blend is a nice sipper for me. It isn’t loaded with a lot of acid. Many white drinkers want a crisp white wine. I prefer something smoother and flavorful. This one has a crisp edge to it but its medium body keeps it in check. I like the melon flavors I detected.
The Alta Maria Chardonnay is a really nice chard. Nice and smooth mouthfeel. Feels buttery but doesn’t taste buttery. The Alta Maria Pinot Noir has some very nice fruit upfront. Drinks a bit more like a cab than a traditional Pinot.
The Beran Zinfandel is one of the best zins I’ve had in a while. I bought a bottle to take home, even though it’s over my usual price point. Nice, nice oak. More vanilla than I’m used to in a zin.
The “fill-in” Conundrum Red Blend is always a good wine. They keep the blend a secret. This is a wine to save a couple of bottles each year so you can compare. The problem with that is trying to keep them, you’ll want to drink them. The 2014 is definitely dark and jammy but not super sweet. Cherry flavors. The tannins keep the jamminess in check. The finish has lush dark flavors.

A tasting pour is not enough to really appreciate the Quilt Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s a very dark wine with nice firm tannins. The oak doesn’t hit you up front but seems to come out on the finish. I suspect drinking a full pour will have different flavors with each sip after your tastebuds have been influenced by the tannins and such. I tried it with some of the cheeses at the nibble table. Very nice. At $42.99 it’s a bit out of my price range but I can see why this wine is in that price range.
Great tasting for $15. And as usual John put out a really nice spread to nibble on.
John baked up some cheese and artichoke spread

Alta Maria Chardonnay 2014 | Santa Maria Valley, California
When I visit their website they list a lot of wines in the $20 plus range. This wine is $10.99, which is a great buy for this wine. I would have to suspect they have some value wines they sell in the market but not on their website. I can’t find any mention of this wine anywhere, especially at this price point. Website

Alta Maria Pinot Noir 2014 | Santa Maria Valley, California
This is the same as their Chardonnay. When I visit their website they list a lot of wines in the $20 plus range but this wine is $10.99, which is a great buy for this Pinot. I like this Pinot and for the price I could buy more. I have to wonder how long it would cellar though. Website
