T he Cork & Flame wine store had a Apaltagua Winery tasting this weekend. Tasters got to meet winemaker Pablo Barros during Friday’s session.
Roger’s newsletter said the winery “is owned by the Tutunjian family and specializes in appellation-based grape varietals.The story of Viña Apaltagua began in 1995, when the successful American businessman Edward Tutunjian was on vacation in Chile, and fell in love with both the country and its surprising wines. It was at that moment that he decided to invest in Chile, and acquired his first vineyard, La Pancora, located in theSeventh Region of Chile, in the prestigious Curicó Valley.
Winemaker Pablo Barros oversees production across several properties with locations in Maule Valley, Colchagua Valley, San Antonio Valley and Casablanca Valley in Chile. Their 65-year-old vineyards and winery are locatedin the prestigious Apalta region of Colchagua, renowned for producing high-end grapes, including Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.
Pablo Barros earned his Agricultural Engineering degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.His educational background and interest is in Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Business Administration and Viticulture. He also achieved a diploma in Vine Physiology and Enology from the University of Chile.Pablo’s career began with various wine production duties in Chile and then in France where he assisted with winemaking and harvests.

CHARDONNAY RESERVA, 2015 Chardonnay is fresh, crisp and juicy with a long and pleasant finish. The grapes come from personally selected vineyards in the cool Casablanca Valley: $12.99

PINOT NOIR RESERVA This Pinot Noir from Apaltagua’s own vineyard in the Curico Valley has a brilliant ruby color and emphasizes aromas of raspberries, and soft notes of oak. It boasts smooth and elegant tannins and a sophisticated finish: $14.99
Apaltagua Envero Gran Reserva Carmenère is a blend of Carmenère and a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon. It is dark, rich fruit character is complemented by eight months in French oak. All of the fruit comes from the Apalta region of the Colchagua Valley and has been harvested from 55 year-old vines: $16.99
MALBEC RESERVA Grown on low ridges at the foot of the coastal mountain range in Maule Valley, this well structured Malbec stands out as a robust and velvety wine with red fruit flavors, such as cherries mingled with plums, truffles and a touch of pepper: $12.99
CABERNET SAUVIGNON RESERVA This Cabernet from an excellent vintage has a deep violet hue and a nose with hints of tobacco and dark chocolate, coupled with ripe stone fruit character in the mouth. Minimal handling preserves its uniqueness and integrity: $12.99
