A beautiful evening for a tasting. The plus for the tasting for me was the Old Vine Grenache, Fagus de Coto de Hayas 2003. How often do you find a nicely aged wine that is difficult to find and at a price that won’t be matched anywhere because they probably don’t have this wine. I spoke with the Benjamins about finding a wine that is almost 10 years old and they said they met the national distributor and took his entire selection after it tasted well. If you get a 6-bottle case you get the wooden box they come in.
I asked one taster, Lisa, what her favorite wine of the evening and said it was the Fagus, “absolutely. I’m a cab fan but tonight it beat it.”
That’s not to say anything bad about the Hyatt Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a nice oaked cab that definitely in the style of a Washington State cab. A bit darker and a bit drier than a typical California cab. This wine does scream for a nice steak.
The Callaway Chardonnay is a very nice crisp California Chardonnay that is very un-California. The tasting notes say it has some oak but I defy anyone to say they can taste it. This has nice apple notes in the aroma and the taste. This is definitely a nice Fall wine.
Once again a great tasting for Wine World. Next up for Wine World is a beer tasting on Friday the 26th and their First Friday Wine Tasting on Nov. 2. Both are from 5-8PM.

Veuve Devienne Sparkling Brut 2010
A fresh floral blend of Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, and Ugni Blanc. Crisp light and lively on the palate with fruity notes. A hint of citrus, and a bit of minerality. Not quite dry, but drier than most “Bruts” in this price range. A superb aperitif! A good match for almost any food; a great match for many. Chicken breasts in a creamy sauce. Seafood salads.

Goes with: Frascati is a fine match for seafood, salads, chicken, mild cheeses. Fontina (Fontal). Roast pork with Mediterranean herbs.
Haut Marin Gros Manseng 2010
This terrific white wine from Gascony (SW France) is crisp & bright, with flowery and slightly lemony aromas, nice hint of minerality. Pear and apple flavors with hints of pineapple. Medium body, lingering finish. Very food friendly and versatile. Aperitif. Sautéed sea scallops in a white sauce. Fish fillets cooked in foil packets with Cajun succotash. Spicy Asian cuisine. Salads.

Callaway Cellar Selection Chardonnay 2010
Aromas of crisp apple with a notes of vanilla and nectarine lead to flavors of round apple, Anjou pear with a hint of fresh ginger root on the finish. Well-integrated oak gives a smooth finish. Try it with stuffed pork chops, lemon herb chicken, pasta Alfredo, or sautéed sea scallops.
Alba Liza Tempranillo/Garnacha 2009
Aromas of blackberry and blueberry. Black fruit flavors with hints of anise and coffee. Medium-bodied with easy tannins and a lingering finish. 65% Tempranillo; 35% Garnacha (Grenache). Enjoy it with a sautéed New York strip. Great for burgers and grilled or roasted vegetables, Manchego cheese.

100% old vines Grenache. Deep ruby color. Aromas of black cherry, chocolate, with a hint of anise & lavender. Medium to full bodied with flavors of cherry & blackberry, good acid and easy tannins. Long finish. This is the top of the line for Coto de Hayas. (Bodegas de Aronesa) Its age gives it a wonderful depth of flavor. Braises and stews. If you buy a 6-bottle case, you get a wooden box. Limited supply. This is a lucky find and a terrific value!
