I sometimes forget to mention the other reason why I like attending Wine World’s Third Thursday and First Friday tastings… the cheese. We always say in our advanced postings “Don’t forget those great cheeses!”
So tonight I want to start with the cheeses. I really liked tonight’s choices. The Double Gloucester with Blue Stilton by Clawson was really good. This creamy, nutty flavor cheese is stuffed with a blue cheese. Nice bold flavors that jump out.
The Sun-dried Tomato and Basil Gouda by Smith’s Farmstead is one of those cheeses I adore. I love those added ingredients that give you something to really want to nibble on. I love cooking with basil and love to see in my cheese.
The Havarti Creamy by Castello is a regular at these tastings. I love this Danish cheese. (along with their creamy bleu cheese). And these paired up nicely with the reds tonight.
Which now brings me to the wines. Nice selection at the white table manned by Andrew Benjamin. The first two French whites were very typical French whites with no oak and a complexity that makes them great food wines. The second white, the Chardonnay La Côte Blanche Macon-Villages can stand as both a sipper and a food wine.
Several riesling lovers told me that the Blüfeld Riesling is one of their favorites. And one of Wine World’s favorites as it has made tasting appearances several times over the years.
The red table had 3 reds that I thought were very similar in the taste profile. The start off with some nice fruit but were dry on the finish. If I had to pick a favorite I couldn’t. All were nice reds that paired up nicely with the cheeses.

    Entre-Deux-Mers is one of our favorite sources of great-value, crisp whites and La Gravière is one of our favorites. A traditional blend of Sauvignon Blanc with some added Semillon to provide body and a hint of honeysuckle character. Aromas of lemon and grass lead through to an almost silky finish. Aperitif. A great match with seafood, chicken, turkey, pork dishes. Asparagus with Parmesan cheese. Goat cheeses.
    Chardonnay La Côte BlancheMacon-Villages, Caves de Lugny | Burgandy, France
    Fresh aromas of minerality, with apple & floral notes.This unoaked Chardonnay has bright, intense flavors of apple and pear and a hint of almond. It shows its Burgundy heritage beautifully. Quality at an amazingly low price. A delightful aperitif. Exceedingly food friendly. Crispy roast chicken. Crab cakes. Broiled fish & butter. Vegetable terrine.     Blüfeld Riesling 2013 | Mosel Valley, Germany
    Medium-sweet, yet crisp and refreshing. Blüfeld offers aromas of citrus and peach with floral notes. Flinty fresh with a juicy mid-palate, balanced acidity and a lingering finish. The blue slate in the Mosel valley adds an intriguing minerality to the wine. Aperitif, sushi, spicy Asian dishes, smoked meats & fish. German style dishes. Roasted onions with proscuitto & Parmesan. Chicken in Orange Sauce.

    Enticing intense flavors of black cherry, along with raspberry and blackberry marry. Vanilla and cocoa notes round out the rich fruit flavors in this blend of Cabernet Sauvignnon & Merlot with smaller amounts of Syrah & Malbec. Lots of ripe fruit with a smooth finish. Grilled pork chops. Burgers with cheese. Steaks. Rich, hearty beef pot roast.
