R oger had what he called a Super Bowl Tasting but in this case it is California vs South America.
“California wines are some of the highest rated and best wines on earth. South American wines are making a name for themselves and many 100 point and Top 100 wines come from Argentina & Chile. The two, California & South America face off this weekend to see which has the better wines in this weeks’ Super Bowl Tasting.”
I stopped by Friday afternoon and enjoyed this wine battle. (Not an epic battle since 3 wines from California and 3 from South America barely make a skirmish but the concept is in keeping with the big game Sunday night). Personally I think it was tie or pretty close to one. I really liked the Felino Cabernet Sauvignon. Nice tannins, not over the top.
From the American side I really liked the Foxglove Cabernet Sauvignon 2013. These 2 cabs were par with each other. I liked the Ghostrider Ungrafted Red 2014 because it is one of those new style reds that are bold and depending on your palate (or what you are nibbling on at the time) very fruit forward (through to the finish) or it’s sweet. Depends on your palate. Some of the fruit forward wines are sweet to those who really prefer really dry wines. The sweet wine lovers would swear its not sweet, just full of flavor. But I’ve found that I can drink a nice cab every day. When it comes to the new red blends I’m finding myself more and more needing to be in the mood to drink one.
Roger said there was going to be live music on Friday… it was… sort of. Kiss 96.3 FM was broadcasting live from out front. They had their live remote van with the speakers aimed at the front doors. I listened to the broadcast on the way home and they did a pretty good job describing the wine tasting… in the same style you would when describing the cars on sale at a broadcast from a car dealer.

Vina Cobos Felino Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 | Mendoza, Argentina
An exquisitely balanced cabernet sauvignon to be highlighted. Its spicy and fruity character outstands. The intense ruby red color anticipates a complex, appealing wine. On the nose, the freshness of the red fruit and the herbal notes like freshly cut grass complements the spicy notes of black pepper, clove and cinnamon, as well cedar and tobacco.
