Fürst Carl Kellerbier | Ellingen, Germany I remember this beer from the Man Bag XXL. It was cloudy with a unique flavor as compared to the others. Tonight I shared a small glass with Dave-in-Law. He liked it and added that it had a hint of lemon in the smell and the taste. It has a mellow amber color. Nice malt mouthfeel but not overly malty. There was a yeasty flavor that approaches a Belgian brew then changes gears and becomes a bit hoppy. Not bitter hoppy but goes from that malty mouthfeel to a bit drier. That yeasty kind of flavor must come from being unfiltered. Dave added that “it doesn’t have an aftertaste and has a smooth finish.” I agree with the no aftertaste but I’m waffling on the dry finish…. or was it smooth. No, I think it was dry. Besides I was enjoying it too much…

I was excited to see the black pop out of the Advent Calendar can hoping it was a dark beer. Nope. Black can, clear beer. This is a Pils similar to the earlier Pils but this one distinctly more bitter. I remember this one being more crisp that the others but I could swear this one starts off a bit buttery like an over-oaked California Chard then it slams shut to being bitter. This one has a long drawn out bitter finish. So as you sip it has some buttery malt backbone then quickly goes bitter and continues that way to the finish. A horse of a different color. The can says it’s brewed by Egerer but Schlossbrau (or Graflich von Mengersen’sche Dampfbrauerei?) has a brewery, the Rheder Castle Brewery, that dates back to around 1750 but the brewery that eventually comes to the castle was started in 1686 (they…

Landgang Pils |Hamburg, Germany Yikes another from the Man Bag. This is the third beer in the calendar that was in the Mannerhandtasche XXL I bought in the summer. The label on this brew creeped me out back when I first tried it in September. It’s got the same Best Buy date as the previous. The label looks like a recruiting poster for the Village People. The sailor has a hop bud on his cap. They call this one a Pils which is a bit more modern form of Pilsner but since Pilsner is originally a Czech brew calling it a Pils gives it more of a non-Czech feel. As I said before Pilsners are typically not my favorite. Some are more bitter than others. This one is a little on the lighter side. It’s got the Pilsner bitterness but is slightly smoother also that’s always a mystery how a…

Teisnacher 1543 Festmarzen |Teisnach, Germany When I pulled it out of the box I got real excited. I really like Marzen-style beers. Is there a difference between a Marzen and a Festmarzen? Don’t know, but I don’t think so. So what is a Marzen? I turned to my handy Oxford Companion to Beer (you got to buy this for your favorite beer lover for Christmas). It’s got a lot of stuff on Marzen. Ah, the plot thickens. Under marzenbier it says “also see Vienna Lager.” Yesterday’s calendar beer was a Wiener Lager or “Vienna Lager.” Marzen” comes from the term Beers of March because they had to make a lot of beer before it got too hot. These brews made in March where often a bit stronger so they could store long into the summer months. Sounds like the stronger IPAs the British would brew so they could survive the…

Egerer Wiener Lager |Großköllnbach, Germany Of course I thought I needed to be eating hot dogs or brats when I saw the label “Wiener Lager.” I counted to 10 and decided you can’t judge a beer by its label. Well you can but not one created in a foreign country and you aren’t familiar with the terms. The Egerer website doesn’t mention this beer. (They also produced the Alms Hell from Advent Day 3). The tasting app says “Wiener Lager is a beer style by Anton Dreher, the Austrian brewing legend. He combined cold fermentation with knowledge of English malting technology and thus created the Viennese warehouse as we know it today.” 5.1% ABV. So obviously they used a cut and paste translation like I have been doing because I was stumped by “Viennese warehouse.” Warehouse is German for Lager. Weiner is a demonym of Vienna according to Wikipedia. It…

Herrnbrau Zwickl Kellerbier |Ingolstadt, Germany I was ready to enjoy a beer. It was a Monday. I was busy all day but didn’t seem to get anything done. It is my night to cook and I was trying to figure out what I could pull together. I had a bag of those small fancy potatoes Publix has on sale. Some are red, some black, some blue. They can be pretty tasty. I was worried they might start growing little roots so I cut them up, tossed them with grated parmesan, olive oil and some Greek seasoning. Tossed them in the oven and baked the hell out of them. Next was very thin chicken breast slices cooked in zesty Italian dressing with some Slap Your Momma seasoning (spices things up). A bag-o-salad and I’m there. Well if you’re gonna cook you might as well have a beer to fill in the…

It’s Day 3 of the Brewer’s Advent Calendar. Looks like it’s back to hell. Of course this isn’t beer hell but helles style beer which according to my handy Oxford Companion to Beer, “is a pale golden lager that is the everyday session beer of Bavaria Germany. The German word ‘hell’ or ‘helles’ simply means ‘pales.'” I say back to hell because on Day 1 we had the Grumpy German Helles. |f there are going to be 24 beers I assume there will be a lot of “hell” to pay. Sorry. Couldn’t resist that. This beer is produced in Großköllnbach, Germany, by Privatbrauerei Egerer. Egerer does not have any info on their website about this brew so I assume this is one they produce for non-German markets. They feature mostly bottled beers but if you dive in deep enough they have some canned beers including a Super Schwarz that sounds…

It’s Day 2 of the Brewer’s Advent Calendar that I bought from Costco back in September. The box I should mention is pretty big and heavy considering it has 24 500ml cans in it. I find trying to break the cans out of their little Advent prison cells is a bit challenging. They are pretty snug in the honeycomb box. I had to turn it on the side and give it a shake which almost caused Day 21 to try and break out. Today is a Weissbier or to us Americans Wheat Beer. This can is pretty much all in German except for the ingredients being listed in english but only after giving it in german. I think this beer is actually soldin Germany. Me and others have speculated that some of the beers in these large packs might not be found in Germany. That theory is being tested here.…

I swore I would never buy a large beer pack with the intent of actually reviewing the brews ever, ever again. I bought one of the Mannerhandtasche XXL (The Man Bag in German) at Lidl back in the summer and took it forever before I was in the mood to taste 13 beers in reasonable amount of time (I still need to publish that review). So as soon as I swore to never buy another one I grabbed the first Brewer’s Advent Calendar I saw at Costco back in September for $69.99. That was a much better price than the $99 Costco wanted for the Wine Adventure Advent Calendar. It is packaged by the same company that produced the Man Bag. Instead of 13 it’s now 24 and I have no clue as to what’s in there. But I suspect it might be some of the same beers I had…
