R oger wasn’t able to send out the newsletter this week so it was a wine mystery event for me. It was a very South American tasting. Lots of wine from Argentina and Chile… except for the sparkling Prosecco from Italy. All nice little wines. I’m torn over which I liked best. Maybe it was the Legado Red Blend. But maybe I liked them all.
And I really liked the nibbles this week. They had a spinach dip that was killer.

Here are the detailed wine notes:
Belstar Cuvee Prosecco | Italy
“Belstar” a lovely name for a vineyard on the threshold of the historical production area of Prosecco. It was right here in these immaculate hills with unparalleled landscapes that the sovereign grape variety of Northern Veneto found its niche, a place to express its natural elegance.
“Belstar” is a Prosecco with a fruity scent and a floral bouquet enhanced during vinification by the protection of the must from the action of oxygen and by a light pressing. An extremely delicate and elegant Prosecco thanks to the great attention paid during the maceration, pressing and slow fermentation stages. Website Cost: $12.99
Apaltagua Reserve Chardonnay | Casablanca Valley
A lovely brilliant yellow hue, our Apaltagua Reserva Chardonnay has flecks of green, and is clean and bright. Aromatically, it reveals hints of tropical fruit, such as passion fruit and pineapple. In the mouth it is fresh, with a hint of minerality and a finish that is delicate but elegant, and leaves a persistent note of citrus at the end.

Apaltagua Malbec | Maule Valley
The Huaquen vineyards, with its unique location, produces a Malbec with very distinct characteristics. Bright and ruby red in color, our Apaltagua Reserva Malbec possesses notes of cherry and cassis with a touch of vanilla. The floral notes also give this wine an edge. On the palate it has well-rounded touches of red fruits and plum. It is ideal to drink now.

Legado Tres Uvas Red Blend | Mendoza, Argentina
Made from 40% Malbec, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Cabernet Franc, this wine is made from the best lots of each varietal. The grapes are grown at 2500 feet of elevation in extremely rocky soil which means great drainage for the vines. The weather was very good before the harvest, allowing the grapes to achieve optimum ripeness, before being harvested by hand.
The ‘Tres Uvas’ refers to ‘three grapes’ in Spanish. Only the free-run juice is used and the grapes are macerated prior to and after fermentation to extract color and flavor. The wine is then aged fourteen months in French oak barrels. This is a wine not to be missed: if it were from Bordeaux, it would sell for at least twice the price. Great with red meats, especially off the grill, more robust cheeses, and game. Will improve by cellaring for at least 10 years.

Apaltagua Cabernet Sauvignon | Colchagua, Chile
Our Apaltagua Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon is characterized as being a sophisticated and elegant wine, in which touches of strawberry and cherry are well emphasized. In the mouth, it possesses a delicate, velvet, full-bodied taste, and has a generous lingering finish.
