I ‘m at Red Sheeses “O’reo Farm” outside Rutledge. Red is at his front gate
serving Bloody Marys and Sam Adams and Yuengling beers. He says many years ago while riding RAGBRAI he came across someone serving free Bloody Marys. He couldn’t believe it. He decided to bring the concept back to Georgia and maintain the
tradition on the BRAG Spring Tune Up ride. (I’ve ridden RAGBRAI twice and no telling what you’ll find being served on the side of hte road).

His farm is named after his black and white cows that look like Oreo cookies. Last year when I stopped the cows were off hiding in the woods. This year they were out pleasing us tourists. They look like giant panda bears but without the markings around the face.

An Oreo cow. Red mentioned what breed they were but I can't remember.

I couldn’t resist having a Bloody Mary. Nice and spicy. Hope it sits well with the pimento cheese sandwich I had at the Caboose Restaurant in Rutledge. For a palate cleanser I had an Oreo cookie. it was a nice touch before trying a Sam Adams Maple Porter. It’s an ale brewed with maple syrup. Definitely a sweet malty brew.

The label says “Sweet new England maple syrup and a distinct pecan note define this balanced porter. The roasted character of our blend of malts complements the maple sweetness with hints of coffee and chocolate. Reddish black in color this full-bodied brew has sweet and slightly nutty finish.”

The sweetest comes from the maple syrup which does add a flavor Reminiscent of the pure maple syrup I had this morning with my pancakes. (I don’t think I’ll be pouring this brew on my pancakes anytime soon).

Red also has a beautiful Model A Ford out front that last year the local Catholic priest was driving around with a sign that said “Manhattan Project”. I asked him what the sign was for and he said “Every Saturday night we meet to experiment with making the best Manhattan there is and I think we’ve succeeded. Red said he had to work today and couldn’t help.

I have to say it was a nice rest stop. I discovered a new beer I really like. Shame its a seasonal. If you like porters with a little sweetness give it a try.
