Kendall-jackson Vintner’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2011|
W hen Mrs. Dan and I started dating we bought a bottle of Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay. We loved it. Nice and oaky and buttery. We bought a lot of it for the first year or so. Then we drifted to more red wines.
So for Mrs. Dan’s ….. 29th birthday…. I found a bottle of Kendall-Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon for $19, marked down from $25. Score!……. I thought.
So tonight for Mrs. Dan’s birthday we opened it. She immediately gave it a thumbs down. I had actually had the first glass and hoped she would like it better than me because I didn’t. I tried to decant it. No improvement. I tried chicken voodoo stuff over it. No luck. This wine has some either mineral notes that is killing it or this batch got overheated during transit.
After we each had a glass we opened a bottle of $9 Angove Red Blend and saved the evening. Happy Birthday. She even commented that the Bota Box Cabernet I opened last night was way much better. (that’s 3 liters and costs about the same).
So, how does a wine like this get to be $25. I’m going to err on the side of thinking that something happened to this wine on the way to Georgia. The color is good. The aroma is a bit strong on the alcohol side but not unpleasant. The aroma is a bit oaky, which I love. The taste is …. well …. rough. The brief rush of fruit jumps immediately to a mineral dryness that is just unpleasant. Maybe it’s a food wine….. if so, I just don’t know which food can save it.
I’m disappointed.
