Harpoon Pumpkin UFO | Boston, MA and Windsor, Vermont
I probably shouldn’t review Harpoon’s Pumpkin UFO tonight but Auburn is playing and I am trying to keep my tradition of drinking pumpkin brews during football season. The reason is last Saturday I had my appendix removed. Modern medicine. Surgery Saturday morning. Home Sunday afternoon. As I recover I’ve refrained from drinking. Tonight I took a little sip of our usual box cab and it didn’t taste good. My taste buds might be messed up.
With luck this one will taste wonderful. I’ve decided to wait until after Auburn scored their first touchdown. With the way the game is going that might be a while. They managed a field goal on a fumble recovery. Now they’ve got the ball back after an interception but they can’t seem to connect. Our defense seems to be getting better while the offense can’t seem to get going. If we win 3-0 that will be very embarassing.
Nice autumn color. Golden orange. You can smell the pumpkins as you put it to you nose. Some baking spices.. gloves and dry cinnamon. Dry finish. Seems to start with a smooth malty feel but then dries out quick. Kinda reminds me Bison Gingerbread Ale but with more pumpkin and less spices.

Nice little sipper. If this was smoother I’m afraid I would gulp it too fast and not enjoy it. I’m enjoying this brew more than this game
Here’s what their website says:
It’s a simple story; we brew this beer because we like pumpkin (pumpkin pie, really) and thought an unfiltered pumpkin ale would be great, especially during the New England fall.  Turns out it is.
Description: Imagine a pumpkin vine wound its way in a field of barley, and a brewer harvested it all to make a beer. Add Northwestern hops and a blend of spices, and you’ve got UFO Pumpkin. The malt combination provides a smooth body and slightly sweet flavor, which balances perfectly with the earthy notes derived from the pure pumpkin. And like all of our UFO beers, UFO Pumpkin is UnFiltered.

Tasting Notes:
Appearance:  Amber and orange with a slight haze
Aroma:  Malty with hints of pumpkin and spice
Mouth feel:  Slightly sweet and smooth
Taste:  A solid malt backbone highlighting German Vienna and Munich malts with a nice dose of pumpkin and spice, reminiscent of pumpkin pie
Finish:  Easy drinking with a lingering pumpkin aftertaste on the back of the tongue
The brew’s gone. Auburn is up by 13 and I got to sweat the rest of this out. KState has outplayed Auburn on so many levels but when they screwed up they screwed up (3 missed field goals) and it didn’t hurt that our defense decided to play after the first quarter. After reading their notes I admit I tasted the pumpkin on the aftertaste but the smoothness for me ended a bit quicker than they seem to imply.
I also think that the color this brew make it taste better. A perception thing. They describe it as “amber and orange.” I said golden orange. No matter, the color just looks like it has to taste good. It is of course a bit hazy or cloudy because the Harpoon UFO line is their Unfiltered Offering.
Speaking of orange. Auburn just won. 20-14. Wasn’t pretty but a win is a win. I actually feel sorry for the KState fans. I can’t say I would ever feel that way when we beat a SEC team. But these guys played hard and the entire town was fired up for the game. Unfortunately when KState messed up they really messed up. Hmmm. That’s 2 teams we beat within that last 6 games when they missed 3 field goals. Sweet.
