H urricane Matthew was trying to reach out for us Friday afternoon. The wind was picking up a bit but the rain didn’t start until after 5. Over in Augusta they were trying to salvage the Border Bash at the old Golf and Gardens. Inside Wine World it was nice and dry and getting handing the crowd nicely.
Good wines and cheeses. The Prime Cuts White Blend is one of the most interesting whites I’ve had a in a while. The flavors were wide and varied and not at the same time. I couldn’t tell you which flavors come up first of last because they were so quick in their variations. The tasting notes said “Jasmine, lemon flowers, bright and citrusy overtones on the nose. The palate is a bright that reflects the sandy soils. Tangy fruits and lovely blossom notes.” This is one where the aromas do influence the taste. Blossum notes could be just about anything. Nonetheless I liked it.
On the red table I was accused of sacrilege. I said that the California Sangiovese from Girasole was better than any Italian Sangiovese I’ve had. After a few gasps and possibly a threat to not let me taste any more. I amended my comments to simply say “this is a really good Sangiovese.” I thought the Project Paso Red Blend was excellent and why not considering the blend: Syrah, Merlot, Zinfandel and Barbera. I didn’t pick up the roasted dill in the tasting notes but then again I’m not sure what that would taste like.
On the cheese table there were featuring a new cheese that I thought would interest my wife so I bought some. But not a lot since it’s $21.99 a pound. Barely Buzzed from Beehive is a cheese with an expresso and lavender. I was warned not to grab it by the rind as the black express would rub off on your fingers. Their website describes it as “Unique espresso and lavender hand-rubbed cheese with subtle notes of butterscotch and caramel. Made from the milk of Jersey cows; this is a full-bodied cheese with a smooth, creamy texture. Barely Buzzed is our most popular cheese and is considered by many to be a great American original.”
Also on the cheese table was Rembrandt Extra Aged Gouda and Delice de France Grand Camembert.
Next up for Wine World is their Third Thursday tasting on October 20 and then on Friday, October 28, they will be having a wines of Spain seminar.

70% Monastrell, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. Opaque ruby/purple color along with notes of lead pencil shavings, blackberries, black raspberries and a hint of blueberries. The sensational fruit characteristics are pure as well as vivid Blue Cheese, Stews, Spicy Chili and Five Alarm BBQ Chicken Wings.
