Bogle Essential Red 2011 | California
I bought this wine about 6 months ago. Mrs. Dan said open something and this was it. I actually paid more than $10 but not much more. I think I paid around $11.99. I couldn’t find my receipt so I’m not sure if it was Vineyard Wine Market or Summerville Ace.
This wine is to red blends as dark roast Columbian beans is to coffee.
This is an old vine red blend. Definitely got some Zin in there. But something darker is there. Syrah. Oh, but there’s more. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah. I can’t remember ever having an old vine blend with these. I’ve had old vine Zins many times. I’ve had an old Vine Syrah. I can’t say I’ve ever had an old vine Cab or Petit Syrah.
This is a dark, dark wine. Very smoky. Smooth but a hint of minerality to leave a bit of dryness at the very end. This wine is unlike any wine I’ve every had. Distinct dark flavors. Very dark cherries. Very dark overripe plums. I read the tasting notes on their website and they mention licorice and pipe tobacco. That’s the smoky flavor I think I’m sensing.
Here’s that their website says:
“A compelling blend of California’s finest plantings of Old Vine Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, this wine surpasses all expectation for pure enjoyment and approachability. Calling on their years of experience and tradition, Bogle winemakers have delivered a wine with… Rich, enticing layers of complexity, starting with that first irresistible sip. Ripe fruit, intense with flavors of boysenberries and sweet cherries. Luscious vanilla, caressing the palate from barrel aging in American and French oak. Juicy and silky throughout, with a finish that lingers of black licorice and spicy pipe tobacco.”–From their Website
It was released in October 2013 so this is actually a fairly recent release. It spent 18 months in American and French oak. I would buy this again especially if it was on sale. Especially so since Mrs. Dan really liked it.
