I was complaining about the rain and one taster commented “what better reason to be here inside tasting wine.” Good point. It was much better inside at Wine World’s Third Thursday tasting sampling 6 nice wines and some great cheeses. On the white table the Hahn Chardonnay stood out because of one flavor that stood out (for once I did taste one of the flavors mentioned in the wine notes) the taste of mango. Nice wine with lots of character. And the Belstar Prosecco was nice and dry. The tasting notes say a touch of honey and I would agree with that. I think this would be a great toasting bubbler for parties during the Masters. My favorite of the evening was the Francis Ford Coppola Claret. To me this 2012 tastes like something that’s been hiding in the cellar for a while. I actually like some older wines that…

R oger was so excited about the special Physicians Assistant Fundraiser tasting on Sunday he forgot to post the wines from his regular weekend tasting in his newsletter. Six wines, that included a sparkler, was presented. Two wines, I have tried before at a wine dinner at the old Bistro 491, were from Jocelyn Lonen Wineryd, which Roger was sad to say, has closed. These are some of the last Jocelyn Lonen wines available. Now the demise of Jocelyn Lonen was reported by the local wine distributors who sometimes get their facts wrong. I did a Google search and found nothing there or at winebusiness.com. Their website hasn’t changed much in a few years but there’s no mention of its demise. If, true then it’s sad. The Jocelyn Lonen Chardonnay is a nice grassy appeal, nice acid, but doesn’t overpower with any heavy oak.. Their Napa Cabernet was nice especially…

T oday we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the discovery that the Merlot in Chile wasn’t Merlot but was the lost grape. Wines of Chile group celebrated with a tweet tasting fest (hash tag #carmenereday) featuring 8 wines. Unfortunately we only received 6 of them so we are enjoying those six. (Wouldn’t you know it that the one $55 bottle was one of the missing ones and the other was one of the most award winning wines of the year). The 2 we missed were the Maquis Viola ($55) and the Santa Carolina Reserva ($22). Those seemed to get good tweets. I guess we’ll take their word for it. Some comments about Carménère. Dennis says this is one of the best food wines. Dan has always commented that he likes Carménère just because it’s the lost grape. It’s a great story and Chilean vineyards have spent the last 20…
