Enjoying Wine and Beer in the Augusta GA area

French Weekend Tasting-Vineyard-May 12-13

Some of the Friday tasters

Roger at the Vineyard featured all French wines this weekend. I really enjoyed the Gonnet La Made Rasteau. Nice red. Nice soft mouthfeel. Dark stone fruit. The nibbles this week were great as well.

Here are the detailed wine notes:
Cap Cette Picpoul de Pinet | Languedoc-Roussillion, France
The wine consists of 100% Picpoul (or Piquepoul) – a very popular, traditional local variety planted on sun-drenched hillsides called “costières” (coastal region) in the Mediterranean garrigue, near the Etang de Thau – a coastal lagoon situated between the port of Sète and Marseillan. The vines are 15-20 years old.
The garrigue is the name given to open scrubland made up of low-growing, dwarf bushy shrubs including holm oak, juniper, broom and wild herbs such as rosemary, thyme and sage.
The color is a superb pale yellow with bright hues. The nose is elegant, with aromas of fresh fruit and citrus fruit especially grapefruit. Well-balanced with typical focusing and zesty acidiy. A pure expression of the grape varietal, the wine shows how good Picpoul can be when grown on its favorite terroir. Website. Cost: $10.99

Prestige De Calvisson Chardonnay | France
Cost: $10.99

Puech Haute Prestige Languedoc Rose |
Magnificent pale robe, complex nose, and hints of citrus, white-fleshed and tropical fruits. Superbly refreshing and pleasant nose, with fabulous fruity sensations (white-fleshed fruits, lychee). With a generous mouth sensation riding on zesty notes, it is both gourmet and refreshing.
This is an enjoyable wine that is perfect for those moments with friends.–From their Website. Cost: $19.99

Gonnet La Mado Rasteau | Rhône, France
Cost: $15.99

Chateau Puech Haute La Closerie Du Pic |
Absolutely unique in Languedoc!. Le Clos du Pic owes its uniqueness to the climate of the lands of Pic Saint Loup. It’s colder and harsher than in Puech-Haut, which is nevertheless 5 km from the peak. Somber robe with blood red reflections. The nose is complicated and has scents of black fruit. The mouth sensation is ample, well-rounded, with silky tannins. Red fruit aromas (cherry, crushed strawberry) blended with a delicate woody tone. Syrah and Mouvèdre grapes are turned to wine in wood vats. It has an exceptional finish, with silky tannins, and Le Clos du Pic owes its strong character to the longer production time; contact with its deposits mean it increases in subtlety, concentration, and longevity. Density, elegance, and sweetness describe this perfectly balanced wine. There are only 18 hl per hectare, even though the appellation can take up to 55 hl.
Around 4000 bottles per year. Website Cost: $26.99

Chateau Larose Trintadon Haut-Medoc |
45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 51% Merlot, 4% de Petit Verdot. Dark ruby colour. The nose is dominated by ripe fruits aromas, especially little red fruits notes but keeps its freshness. The palate is rich, full and round with already well integrated tannins. There is a good long finish, without any harshness. This wine is charming.–From their Website Cost: $23.99
