Thanksgiving Wines Tasting-Vineyard-Nov. 10-11

Some of the Friday afternoon crowd

Roger is featuring some wines that should brighten up anyone’s Thanksgiving table. I stopped by Friday afternoon to sample and stock up for the weekend. I liked everyone of these wines. Now I liked the EnRoute Les Pommiers Pinot Noir 2014 but it’s a bit over my price range. Now I love my in-laws but not that much.

If you want a slightly sweet wine with the turkey, and at a great price, the Fetzer Gewürztraminer at $8 is pretty good. Several of us tasters were discussing the flavors. We settled on bananas and honeysuckle.

The Hahn SLH Chardonnay is a nice oaked chard that isn’t buttery. Uses french oak so its a bit tighter and seems more Old World that New World. The two wines from Tarapaca, their Red Blend and Carmenere, were most excellent. I really love the Carmenere. It has nice dense flavors and fruit, low acidity, that I seldom find in many Careeners. I love Carmenere and Zins. This Carmenere drinks like a Zin.

It’s a toss up between the Trentadue Old Patch Red Blend and the Tarapaca Carmenere on what was my favorite. Great nibbles as usual.

Roger will be featuring more great Thanksgiving wines next weekend as well.

Here are the detailed wine notes:

Fetzer Gewurztraminer 2015 | Cental Coast, California
For more than 30 years we’ve nurtured the foggy Central Coast vineyards that bring a good “Gew” to life. With flavors of honeyed apricots and fresh peach, it’s a secret weapon for taming spicy food. Website
Cost: $8

Hahn SLH Chardonnay 2015 | California
A cross between an obscure grape and a member of the famous Pinot family, the Chardonnay grape reveals its Pinot origins by being ever-so-sensitive to all influences: soil, climate and winemaking methods. When grown in the Santa Lucia Highlands, where impeccable sugar and acid balances are attained vintage after vintage, Chardonnay is both impossibly delicate and full bodied at the same time. Website
Cost: $24

EnRoute Les Pommiers Pinot Noir 2014 | Napa
Lovely aromas of blackberry and Bing cherry are balanced by notes of sage, underbrush, and a touch of forest floor. Deep color, firm, yet fine-grained tannins, and a rich, juicy midpalate are hallmarks of the 2015 vintage. Because of this wine’s structure and intensity, setting a few bottles aside in the cellar for five or ten years will reap rewards. Website
Cost:
$50

Tarapaca Red Blend 2014 | Chile
The wine has a ripe fruit profile style with fresh and spicy notes and specially wild aromas from the organic management that we do. The mouth is soft and with minerals tannis and both things are due to the mediterranean macroclimate with a fresh mesoclimate (high influence from the Maipo river and fresh winds) and finally the soil is volcanic with high content of minerals and high porcentage of angular rocks.
Cost: $17

Tarapaca Carmenere 2015 |
This wine has an expressive, complex, fresh aroma characterized by spicy notes such as clove and pepper, as well as subtle vegetal notes such as red pepper. These aromas are apparent due to the fact that the vineyards are situated very close to the river, with its cool waters, and also due to the summer afternoons, whereby fresh breezes travel up through the valley from the pacific ocean to the Andes mountain range. This wine stands out for its unique red ruby color and black fruit aromas; in mouth it is well rounded and rich in flavors, where the figs notes and wild fruits, together with delicate spices aromas, are in perfect harmony. For this reason, on the palate the wine is round, smooth, full-bodied, and with ripe tannins. Black fruit aromas are present, such as blackcurrant, blackberry and plum. Flavorsome, balanced and with good persistence.
Cost: $17

Trentadue Old Patch Red Blend 2016 | Alexander Valley, California
The wine has dark red color with intense black cherry aromas, blueberries and cherry cola as an immediate impression. With aeration nuances of ripe plums, vanilla and cocoa are showing with slight dose of oak and toast. On the mouth the wine is fresh and juicy with youthful brightness, finishing long and fruity. This is a wine that will drink well with variety of foods but it is also very enjoyable on its own. Website
Cost: $15
