Alexander Valley Red | California
The 2015 is a blend of six of our favorite grapes. Each varietal adds a different flavor profile to this well balanced wine. Winemaker Kevin Hall selected Merlot with rich concentration to anchor the blend, then added Zinfandel for spicy notes, Grenache for berry flavors, Mourvedre for additional texture, Cabernet Sauvignon for elegant structure, and then rounded out the blend with Syrah for bright berry flavors and floral aromatics..
The western drought continued in 2015 and was once again the topic of much discussion. A cool spring, rain at bloom and a hot July along with the continued effects from the lack of rain contributed to lower yields and one of our earliest harvest dates. As a result the grapes had terrific balance and concentration, and superb fruit flavors at harvest. The individual lots for Homestead Red Blend were picked, fermented and barrel aged separately in order to maximize complexity and broaden the flavors in the glass.
This dark purple wine has complex aromas of dark cherry, black pepper, plum, oak, vanilla and spice. In the glass there are spicy flavors of red fruits, berry, plum, cherry, oak and vanilla. This is a fruit forward wine with nice balance and a long structured finish. Merlot 44%, Zinfandel 35%, Grenache 7%, Mourvedre 7%, Cabernet Sauvignon 5%, Syrah 2%. Website
Cost: $29.99

Hess Lion Tamer Red | Napa, California
“We affectionately call this wine ‘Tamer’ because blending Lion Tamer is both challenging and rewarding especially when you start with Malbec as the core. Malbec on its own brings heady, floral aromas of violets and can be what I call the wild child. Big, bold and juicy upon entry, Malbec is virtually loaded with flavor. When you layer in Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon, you get complex layers of blackberries, milk chocolate, black plums and exotic perfume that carry throughout a plush texture and a ripe juicy core of black fruits. The signature of Lion Tamer is a generous palate of black raspberry and surprisingly lush tannins.” – Dave Guffy, Director of Winemaking. Website
Cost: $39.99
