First Friday Tasting-Wine World-Feb. 2

This pup was more interested in my camera that the wines. He did not try any of the wines.


It was almost speed dating for me tonight. Instead of meeting ladies, which Mrs. Dan would not appreciate, it was wine. I really wanted to try these wines but didn’t have much time.
I hate speed-tasting but’s better than no tasting especially when all the wines are good. Another disadvantage is you don’t have much time to chat with friends or meet new ones. But then again I tasted some nice wine.
The wine makers at Domaine De Pellehaut know how to blend. The six grapes in this wine are really nice. I’m not big on minerally white or acidic whites. This one nice fruit but yet not sweet.

The Barnard Griffin Pinot Gris is a very light wine but lacks for taste. Fruit but not over the top. The Sokol Blosser Evolution 20th Edition NV is like a history report for the West Coast. It has grapes from California, Oregon, Washington State and from multiple vintages. They’ve been doing this for years. This eight-grape white blend would please just about any white wine drinker.

Over at the red table Michael and I swapped notes. The Black Beret Grenache Syrah is nice and bold and leans toward a New World wine than Old World. The Garofoli Farnio Rosso Piceno was very pleasing. It too was a bit New World. Nice coffee and vanilla flavors.

The King & Cannon Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon is really good Washington State Cab. I was detecting some chocolate. It paired up nicely with the newest cheese that Wine World has received: Beecher’s Flagship Handmade Cheese (aged 15 months). Also at the cheese table was DaneKo Fontina and Rising Sun Farms Gorgonzola Cheese Torta.

Next up for Wine World is Third Thursday on February 15th (unless they sneak a seminar in). Well the speed-tasting is over.

Domaine De Pellehaut Blanc 2015 | Gascogne, France
Sauvignon, Colombard, Ugni Blanc, Chardonnay, Gros Manseng and Petit Manseng. Delicately coloured with green tints. Lemon zest, peach, grapefruit, and pineapple on the nose. On the palate, complex palate of pear, lime, pineapple, honey and grapefruit. A perfect match for seafood. Website

Barnard Griffin Pinot Gris 2016 | Columbia Valley, Washington
Juicy acidity lends a fresh, vibrant feel to the apple and pear flavors found in this delicious Pinot Gris. Subtle elements of orange blossom and honey complete the package. Rich fish (salmon, tuna etc), Shellfish, Mature and Hard Cheeses. Website

Sokol Blosser Evolution 20th Edition NV | U.S.
A nonvintage blend of White Riesling, Pinot Gris, Semillon, M├╝ller-Thurgau, Gew├╝rztraminer, Muscat Canelli, Chardonnay, Early Muscat Spicy and floral on the nose, this wine is lush and tropical on the palate, with a soft and round sweetness that is tempered by a burst of citrus, leaving the finish clean and crisp. Black Beret Grenache Syrah 2015 | Minervois, France
80% Grenache, 20% Syrah Deep red colour, purple at the rim. Intense aromas of vanilla, coffee, red fruit, spice and herbs. Rich yet soft on the palate, with well-integrated tannins. Good length. Perfect with all full-flavored meat dishes, and as ideal with traditional French cuisine as well as more international dishes whose flavours include a note of spice. Website

Garofoli Farnio Rosso Piceno 2016 | Marche, Italy
60% Montepulciano 40% Sangiovese Lively ruby red. Intense fruity bouquet with hints of ripe plums. Spicy, juicy cherries and berries, dry and slightly vinous in taste. Delicate, well-integrated tannins. cheese pizza, charcuterie, grilled meat.

King & Cannon Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 | Walla Walla, Washington
Aromas of ripe red and black fruits, licorice, coffee and cassis. Creamy black raspberry and dark cherry flavors. Tannin is smooth and ripe. braised beef ribs, garlic chicken wings, grilled portobellos.
