Enjoying Wine and Beer in the Augusta GA area

Weekend Tasting-Vineyard-June 29-30

A nice summer selection

Roger had a theme in mind. “Man! It’s Hot! Sangria to the Rescue! Cold Beer Too!” was his headline. His message though was “DON’T COOK YOUR WINE!!!! Heat & Wine is not a good pairing! When wine is subjected to high temperatures and wine begins to seep out of the bottle, it can develop a ‘cooked’ flavor, and will start declining rapidly. What’s a wine-lover to do? Pop the cork and get ready for some emergency drinking: If the wine tastes like stewed fruit, dump it down the sink. It wouldn’t be harmful to drink it, but it wouldn’t be much fun, either. If the wine tastes good, pour yourself a glass and enjoy it while you can.”

And what better way to escape the heat. A tasting at the Vineyard. He decided to beat the heat and had a little Sangria Tasting this weekend. He also tried some of the new Green Flash brews that have hit this side of the river finally.

The wine side:

  • White Sangria
  • Red Sangria
  • White Mimosa
  • Red Mimosa

Here are the detailed brew notes:
Green Flash “Rayon Vert” Belgium Style Pale Ale 2010
If Green Flash were founded in historical Belgium, Rayon Vert would have been our flagship brew. A bold layering of hops finds balance from traditional malts. Bottle conditioning with fresh ale yeast and Brettanomyces finishes the beer, adding a delightful effervescence, dryness and continuously evolving character. Rayon Vert is Green Flash.–From their Website

Green Flash “Le Freak” Ale
An ‘out of the box’ modern ale crafted by converging two beer styles, Belgian Trippel and American Imperial IPA. Dry-Hopped and Bottle-Conditioned – it’s a zesty brew with enticing American hop and fruity Belgian yeast aromatics. ALC. BY VOL. 9.2% | IBUS: 101

Green Flash ” West Coast” IPA
A menagerie of hops is layered throughout the brewing process: Simcoe for unique fruitiness and grapefruit zest, Columbus for strong hop pungency, Centennial for pine and citrus notes and Cascade for floral aroma. A multi-dimensional hop experience. ALC. BY VOL. 7.3% | IBUS: 95.

Green Flash “Hop Head Red” IPA
Resinous hop characteristics emerge from an enormous hopping with Columbus, Nugget and Amarillo overtaking the rich caramel malt base. To add luscious hop flavors and enticingly floral hop aromas, we dry-hop the brew with bucket loads of Amarillo hops. Welcome to the world of Red IPA. ALC. BY VOL. 7.0% | IBUS: 70.
