Enjoying Wine and Beer in the Augusta GA area

Rammer Jammer Yellowhammer, go to Hell Alabama

-

Peroni

This was the best beer and wine I’ve ever consumed. It was during one hell of a game where Auburn came back from 24-0 (that part was kinda painful) and beat the Crimson Tide 28-27. Sweet. Mrs. Dan had decided my beer choice for the game by bringing home a six of Peroni two days ago. When I go to an Italian restaurant I always order Peroni or Moretti. I like them both. This is a traditional Italian beer, light and clean but has some bitter hops in there. It has a very long finish that lingers a bit too long. You got to eat something to clear the palate, even sometimes 5 minutes afterwards. It’s good cold in a frosted glass. I wouldn’t drink it every day since I go for darker brews but it’s nice to have occasionally.

As for the wine, Haut Poitou 2009, is an under $10 wine I bought for a Cheap Bastard selection from Wine World. Mrs. Dan was getting anxious as Auburn was starting their comeback. I let her choose which wine to open and she decided to go French.

All in all it was a great day. At 5:30 I gave Mrs. Dan a little shove to see if she still wanted to go fight the 6am Black Friday crowds. All I got was a grunt. We didn’t get up until after 7. Got Mr. Ben up and dressed with a hint that we were going to find Santa. Went straight to Office Depot and found exactly what we were looking for then took off for Staples and found exactly what we were looking for and then to Bed, Bath and Beyond and once again found what we were looking for. We were 3 for 3 and home by 10am. Not bad for Black Friday. And we got an extra hour or so of sleep.

Back to the wine. Auburn played miserably for the first quarter and a half because I had forgotten to wash my lucky Auburn shirt. I finally got it out of the dryer about the time they finally scored a touchdown. Then Auburn started playing better with every time Mrs. Dan got some wine. I have a tradition of only drinking beer during a game. No wine. Like I’ve said before even the Georgia Tech fight song says “I drink my whisky clear” not “I drink my wine white.”

So after the game I started drinking her lucky wine. Mrs. Dan described it as “bright.” She says it was light, some fruit but also got the acidity tamed by dryness like a white wine. A dry lingering finish. I taste a minerality that many French and Italian wine have. I suspect that this wine would taste perfect with foods from the Haut Poitou wine region. It was good with some Laughing Cow cheese with garlic and herbs. Didn’t go with the shrimp, leftover squash casserole or some turkey salad Mrs. Dan made. After sampling so many Beaujolais the other night at the Ballet fund raiser I could recognize the Gamay in this wine. It’s only 30% but I think it is produces that dry acidic taste. It tasted great considering Auburn won. If Auburn had lost I wouldn’t be so enthusiastic. Mrs. Dan liked it and that’s enough for me. One point determined that this was a good wine.

War Damn Eagle. Now we have to sweat through another game against the Old Ball Coach. I’m hoping the Gamecocks who lost 3 games shows up, not the Gamecocks that won 9 games. (luckily they did).

Also for those unschooled in the ways of the Iron Bowl, Alabama has a cheer “Hey Auburn. We just beat the hell out of you! Rammer Jammer, Yellowhammer, give ‘em hell, Alabama!”

Tonight we cheer “Hey Alabama! We just beat the hell out of you! Rammer Jammer Yellowhammer, go to Hell Alabama!”

I forgot to mention another plus for the day. When Auburn or her beloved Michigan is losing she starts cleaning the house. It got pretty clean during the first half. I’m praying the house doesn’t get cleaned further tomorrow when Michigan plays Ohio State. I’m hoping she finds some more lucky wine.

Here’s what we had tonight:
